Allied Health

The NSW Rural Allied Health Project Officer commenced in January 2007, for a period of two years. HIs role is that of senior advisor for the Institute on rural allied health issues.  In this capacity he advises the Institute on issues facing rural allied health professionals.

In partnership with NSW Department of Health, Area Health Services and other agencies such as Universities and University Departments of Rural Health the Rural Allied Health Project Officer advises on strategies to support allied health practitioners across all stages of their careers.

This role also involves working with leading state and national Rural and Allied Health organisations to identify and promote good practice models of allied health practice including services delivery, recruitment and retention, and training and education, and to influence the adoption and implementation of programs which can promote excellence and innovation in these areas.

ACTIVITIES
  • The NSW Rural Allied Health Conference 2007:  NSW Health recognises that Allied Health services are a critical part of the NSW Health Workforce.  This conference was held in Dubbo during October and provided an opportunity for allied health professionals, health service managers, educational institutions and others to share valuable experiences and raise issues facing allied health practitioners and the services they deliver in rural and remote NSW. • NSW Health Allied Health Directors & Advisors:  The NSW Rural Allied Health Project Officer is an active ex-officio member of this peak group in NSW, which serves to ensure that the NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching is aware of, and can influence and facilitate the co-ordinated direction of capacity-building efforts across NSW. The position specially collaborates with Rural Allied Health Directors on various projects.
  • NSW Rural Allied Health Clinician Locum Project: This collaboration between the four rural Area Health Services in NSW, along with Charles Sturt University, has met and will deliver clear improvements to services in areas where difficulties around Allied Health locums exist.

  • Allied Health Research and Education Collaborative:  This group on the North Coast is being formed with the assistance of the Rural Allied Health Project Officer, and will see co-operation between the NRUDRH, NCAHS, Southern Cross University, and Sydney University in research into Allied Health Workforce issues.
  • Rural Clinician Network: The consultation processes of this NSW Rural Institute Project have again highlighted the needs of allied health clinicians in rural areas, in this case for those working in Rehabilitation. The Rural Allied Health Project Officer is part of a steering committee for that project specifically to give direction on education, communication and resourcing issues for Rehab clinicians who are Allied Health.
  • NSW Institute of Rural Clinical Services and Teaching Research Grants: The “Institute” round of grant submissions attracted many Allied Health related ideas. This position will oversee and assist the implementation of the successful submissions from this group, encouraging collaboration and information sharing across the rural Area Health Services.
