Business Documents

Rural and remote health workers have expressed a need for access to a range of business documents to help them in their day to day work.

The following links to useful websites have been provided, and any suggestions on the types of documents listed, or other sources would be welcome.

It should be noted that a wide variety of documents exist, and their purposes are often quite different according to the organisation they are used in.

Strategic Plan - this document is usually a long range plan (commonly five years) developed at a high level in the organisation. It often includes the organisation's mission, vision, values and goals/objectives and sets the organisation's future direction. It should be informed by current legislation, policy and the environment the organisation works within; and in turn provides direction for the next level(s) of planning in the organisation.

Examples:

IRCST Strategic Plan

NHMRC-Strategic Plan

Northern NSW Oral Health Network - Strategic Plan

Business Plan - this document describes the operational intentions of the organisation (or section of the organisation). In small business this document can also include the organisation's financial plan, but in many cases it simply operationalises a higher level plan, eg Strategic Plan/Corporate Plan. Examples:

IRCST Business Plan

NSW Dept State & Regional Development - Business Planning Guide

Strategic Business Plan - this document is a combination of the strategic plan and the business plan.

Example:

NSW Department of Toursim, Sport and Recreation - Sample Strategic Business Plan

Business Case - this document analyses the pros and cons of a particular proposal, including the resources required and the risks associated with it. Often it will include alternative proposals and identify the risk and benefits of doing nothing. Additional descriptions can be found on the following links:

WA Department of Health Business Case Guidelines

Australian College of Health Service Executives - Presentation

Examples/templates:

SA Department of Health - Nurse Practitioner Business Case Template

Australian Divisions of General Practice Business Case Study - Nursing in General Practice

Scoping Paper - this document should identify and scope the issues surrounding a particular subject. It should give the reader an understanding of the current situation, regardless of their previous knowledge on the subject. Examples:

Queensland Health - Scoping Paper

European Commission - Animal Health Advisory Committee

Australasian Centre for Police Research

Performance Appraisal/Development Plan - in managing staff, the performance appraisal and/or development plan are well used tools, with proven results. Some additional information is contained on this link: National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction - Performance Appraisal

Council of Social Service of NSW
